9 big sins of Leaders and Managers

Have you got a manager or leader who acts in a way that makes your blood boil?

We’ve all seen them, and the occasional actions or repeated behaviour, that’s certain to frustrate and demotivate us.

You may even be a manager or leader that’s guilty of this. Bad managers and bad leaders are a big reason people leave their jobs, so don’t be the person that causes that. If looking at the leadership and management sins below is like looking in the mirror, then it’s time to change your ways.

  Micromanaging

You’ve employed them to do the job, so trust them to and leave them alone to get on with it.

Not getting to know your team as people

If you want the best from them, you must engage with them on a real and personal level. It’s beyond knowing their names, and about connecting with the individual.

 Ignoring problems

Burying your head in the sand doesn’t make it go away. Your team expect you to take the action necessary to deal with issues.

Not doing what you say you will

Once you’ve made a commitment, your team expect it to happen. If you don’t mean it, then don’t say it.

 Putting yourself before your team

If you want to be respected, you should always think of, and put the team first.

 Not holding others to account

You’re expected to deal with trouble in the team. Allowing poor performance and behaviour to persist says you’re ok with it.

 Not having a plan

Drifting along will frustrate everyone and erode confidence in you. Your team want to know there’s a well thought out path to a goal.

 Not taking responsibility

Everyone makes mistakes, and if you make one you’re expected to hold your hands up and own it.

 Reacting to everything

Not everything needs your attention, or needs to be treated like a major problem. Use some perspective and don’t stop work and progress unnecessarily.

Don’t think these common mistakes go unnoticed, or are somehow excused, because your ‘in charge’. The reality may show, and your team will know, that’s clearly not the case.
