There are many great examples of leadership but there are just as many examples of what leadership isn’t. You’ll find people who think they’re leading but they’re not, and others who think they know how to lead but they don’t.
They usually don’t see it but those around them, often picking up the pieces, do. They know that leadership isn’t:
👎 Having an idea and expecting it to just happen
👎 Thinking only your own ideas are good
👎 Delegating everything
👎 Only doing the jobs you like
👎 Dictating to everyone
👎 Shying away from important decisions
👎 Thinking those reporting to you aren’t important
👎 Thinking those you report to are the only important ones
👎 Concentrating on the here and now
👎 Playing it safe
👎 Micromanaging
👎 Doing everything yourself
👎 Taking all the credit
👎 Thinking you know best
👎 Wielding power
👎 Keeping information to yourself
👎 Stopping feedback and criticism
👎 Talking and not listening
👎 Thinking you’re above the rules
👎 Having all the answers
👎 Something you can learn from a book
👎 Learnt in a day
👎 Never being wrong
👎 Pleasing everyone
👎 The same as management
We’re taught what leadership is and how to be leaders but it can be just as important to know what leadership isn’t.
