Have you ever led a project and felt you were the only one who believed in it, and able to see the potential benefits?
Some projects can pitch you into the unknown, making you feel alone, with an uphill task. I’ve experienced this more than once in my career when, facing endless obstacles and with negativity from others, giving in would be the easy thing.
At these times, if you know you’re doing the right thing, it can pay to have a champion.
A champion should be someone whose voice and opinion carries weight and whose involvement is seen as making the matter a serious issue and success of great value. Finding one who will be seen as credible and getting them onboard at the beginning is vital. A respected, influential champion brings many benefits and can make the difference between success and failure.
If I’m facing a tough challenge I’ll always try to get a champion onboard and know these will be some of the benefits:
They fight your corner.
They have your back.
They keep you motivated.
You’ll be braver.
You won’t want to let them down.
They help get others on board.
They give credibility and importance.
They can be a sounding board.
They remove barriers and obstacles.
They can access resources and information.
