I’ve spoken to several Practice Managers recently who’ve had enough. I wonder if their managers, GP Partners, are aware of this. I’d be certain they’re not. I’d be as confident the problem will be repeated across the country.
This is for the GP Partners.
Have you considered the risk of losing your PM?
It should be the highest risk on your practice risk register.
Have you considered the impact if that were to happen?
Who would run payroll?
Pay suppliers?
Complete returns and invoices to bring in income?
Handle unhappy staff and patients?
That’s just a start.
Who else do you have to do these if there isn’t a PM?
A deputy might do some.
A partner couldn’t or wouldn’t want to.
Not all the tasks can be shared out.
What other damage would there be?
You would lose the huge amount of knowledge only the PM has.
It can unsettle and start a practice decline.
What can you do to prevent this?
Have a succession plan.
Record the key tasks and responsibilities of the PM.
Duplicate the critical skills and knowledge across the team.
But
The most important thing you can do is.
Get to know to your PM and what they do.
Respect them, protect them and don’t take them for granted.
Keep the PM happy, safe and secure so you don’t fall over the edge.
